Binissalem
Binissalem, with its 7030 inhabitants is located 22 kilometers from the capital city of Palma. Three
lower mountains belong to this community, which is the Bous Penyal with
408 meters is the highest, and Sa Talaia with 309 m of the lowest.
Binissalem is the wine village of Mallorca. The wine from this region is only one of the island by the appellation of origin protected denomination of origin. Already in the 14th wine was pressed here. After the phylloxera destroyed the vineyards began in the 1980s, the wine to develop new, high-quality wines are grown today.
History
The name comes from the Arabic name Binissalem Banu Banu Salim Salam, or what as much as sons or sons of peace is, of Salim. Wine was not always the topic in the village. 300 years ago was a sugar refinery and the mid-18th Century was discovered in a high volume of lignite. Beginning of the 19th Century was in this place, the first shoe factory and in 1914 there was the first football ground on the island.
